I am afraid, Mr. Fisher, that you are pointing to a condition as old as politics. The attainment of power being one's goal,and the populace able to grant or withhold it, politicians need to stick their moistened fingers into the air to see which way the winds are blowing.
I am observing the behavior of certain Republican Senators up for re-election in '08, who in previous times supported their President. The gap between them and Bush grows by the day, as the President poll numbers decline. I am mentioning no names.
I also recall Democratic Senators during the impeachment fiasco of Pres. Clinton.
In fact, pandering is one of the most firmly implanted phenomena of democratic ( lower case, please) politics.
The panderers are worthy of blame for it, of course, but as in the case of the oppossum named Pogo in Walt Kelly's Comic Strip, "We have met the enemy and it is us !"
So the question is: How can we, the people, rise above the expectations that produce that shamefulbehavior ?

Dear sir,
I may or may not be a Democrat, Republican or McCain supporter.
I do not agree McCain has 'flip-flopped' with respect to his comments about Rumsfeld. I do not have a problem with anyone expressing opinions in the political realm,but I do have a problem with disingenousness and jumping over obvious disconnects when comparing statements made by others.
Note that Rumsfeld has spent many years in public service and Secretary of Defense was his last job. Can you not see that McCain's comment about Rumsfeld's overall service was laudatory and that only the last post was problematic?
