I want to caution those looking at the recent moves by the Right to reign in Presidental power against the view that they have all of a sudden 'discovered' their principles. No, instead I propose that it is a preventative strike looking at the 2008 elections!

Let me explain. Over the past 5 years I've been asking my students who support President Bush's efforts to consolidate more power under the Executive Office what they think will happen when his term ends. I ask my most ardent Bush supporters if they would be comfortable with Hillary having the power to peek into their private lives as Bush has or to unilaterally declare someone an illegal combatant and torture them without any oversight. They look at me and roll their eyes never thinking of that possibility.

I hate to say it, but I believe the Right did the same thing. They rushed to consolidate power under the executive branch never believing they would leave power or more simply, never thinking that far into the future. However, as the possiblity of the Right losing the next election looms on the horizon, they realize the tremendous power that now potentially lies in the hands of a President H. Clinton or a President Edwards or Obama or ....

I think the rumblings about Constitutional principles is all and only about power - pre-emptively or preventatively ensuring that the Democrats cannot do to the nation what the Republicans did....Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5840053.post-1175696554799014112007-04-04T09:22:00.000-05:002007-04-04T09:22:00.000-05:00Hi Bill,This is a very good article you've written...Hi Bill,

This is a very good article you've written. IMO, not nearly enough has been said or is in the public conciousness that there is much more widespread opposition to Mr. Bush's attempted and dangerously real expansions of presidential power than just the antiwar left and the small democratic majority in congress.

With your permission I would like to repost your article in entirety at Edgeing, with attribution and backlink, of course.

OK by you?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
